SACATAR REGULAR APPLICATION PROCESS - 2012/13

The postmarked deadline for submissions for our next Open Application Process has been postponed until 2012.  We will announce the new date for postmarked applications in 2011.  We regret any confusion or disappointment this may cause.

We will review all applications postmarked on or before the deadline date and we will allow up to six weeks for the postal service to deliver packages to Itaparica, Brazil.   We regret that incomplete applications and those postmarked after the deadline will not be considered.

Your application must include the following materials:

  1. Completed application form.  The application form is available as a DOWNLOAD.
  2. Professional resumé (curriculum vitae), including significant achievements, awards, residencies, etc.
  3. Description of the project you expect to work on while a resident at the Instituto Sacatar.  We strive to provide excellent conditions for solo work, but we also seek to facilitate work with entities and organizations in the local community. If you have a specific community-oriented idea, please explain. Feel free to state alternative plans of action. Remember that once in Bahia, things may change. Flexibility and improvisation are essential.
  4. Why Bahia?:  In fifty words or less, please state why this opportunity to work in Bahia, Brazil, is of interest to you and what you think you could do in the cultural milieu of Bahia that you could not do in another residency setting. (In other words, why Bahia, and not Berlin or Beijing?) This statement will be read to the selection committee members.
  5. Description of physical work needs: equipment, space, furniture, etc. If during the creative process you use sound, please let us know how that sound might be controlled so that it does not disturb the other residents. We do not have a sound-proof studio.
  6. Two letters of recommendation, submitted directly by the evaluators to the Instituto Sacatar on the forms available as a DOWNLOAD. Applicants are responsible for sending the forms to their evaluators and for providing them with the appropriate information. The application deadline applies to the letters of recommendation.
  7. US$35.00 (thirty-five dollars) application fee: payable to the Sacatar Foundation via Paypal.  (Click on the PAYPAL icon above.)  A money order or personal check may also be sent, payable to the Sacatar Foundation, in US dollars or its equivalent in euros.  Do not make checks payable to the Instituto Sacatar.
  8. Samples of recent representative work.  Click on GUIDELINES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF WORK SAMPLES for details.

Send the application form and the additional required materials listed above to:

We evaluate applications submitted primarily by individual artists, but in our open application process, we also consider proposals submitted by small groups.

ABOUT GROUP PROPOSALS: The proposal by two or more artists for a Group Project must include a specific timeline and outcome, with more detail than the proposal by an individual artist.  A Group Project preferably involves a team of diverse nationalities and/or disciplines, with the possible inclusion of members of the local community and/or local institutions.  (We can help you with the local contacts, if necessary, after your Project is approved.) Each group member should individually fill out the application form, pay the application fee and send personal work samples and letters of recommendation.  Examples of previous joint work may also be submitted, but you must clearly explain the participation of each group member individually.  Previous joint work is not a prerequisite.  All application materials for the Group Project, with the exception of the letters of recommendation, should be mailed in a single package.

Please note that when proposing a Group Project that involves the local community, it is very important to be cognizant of the socio-economic reality of the island of Itaparica.  In general, the permanent inhabitants of Itaparica have a limited education and few economic opportunities. Community-based projects should awaken their curiosity. The local population will simply not respond to extremely arcane or erudite proposals.  Also, Brazil is a continental country, much like the United States; and most people, even among the highly educated classes, tend to speak only one language, which in Brazil is Portuguese.  Almost no one on the island speaks any English.  Thirdly, many people cannot afford to volunteer their time.  However, they are often eager to learn a new skill.  Workers also can be hired at a very affordable daily rate of about fifteen US dollars.  Any Project that proposes to involve the local population should take these factors into account.

We can accept no group larger than five. That is the number of bedrooms that we currently have available.  Please indicate if any two members of your group are willing to share a room, either as a couple or as individuals.  (We have one two-room suite where it is possible to install two beds.)

Please contact us at info@sacatar.org if you have any specific questions.
